Gulu city guide
Gulu lies in northern Uganda, in the Acholi region, and it is the city most travellers pass through on the way from Kampala to Kidepo Valley National Park. The usual road runs from Kampala through Gulu and Kitgum to the park. The city is also home to the regional referral hospital, which shows its role in the north.
Treat Gulu as a place to rest, eat and sort out supplies before the final stretch. If you are still choosing a way to reach the park, compare the options in the Kampala to Kidepo guide and the Uganda safari tours.

Gulu in numbers
City and district are counted separately.
| Item | Figure | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Gulu City | 233,271 | 2024 census count |
| Gulu District | 135,373 | 2024 census count, separate from the city |
| Kampala to Kidepo via Gulu and Kitgum | About 571 km | Route figure, so use a navigation app on the day |
| General distance to the park | About 700 km | A rough figure, not tied to one route |
In short, use the numbers to understand scale, not to plan to the minute. Ask your driver for the real travel time on the day.

Kidepo safaris and trips from Kampala
Gulu is the usual overnight stop on the road to Kidepo. See which multi-day safaris and transfers pass this way, and check what each one includes.
Gulu as a stop on the road to Kidepo
The road from Kampala to the park is long, and Gulu is a natural place to break the journey. Park gates are open from 07:00 to 19:00, so plan each day so that you arrive in daylight.
Ask your driver or tour operator for the distance and travel time from Gulu to the park gate and for how the last stretch works. Avoid driving at night: government advice for Karamoja asks travellers to do the same.
Murchison Falls is a possible stop or detour on a longer route north. If you plan that, read the guide to getting to Kidepo first, and for the falls themselves see the Murchison Falls guide.

Kitgum: the next town on the route
North of Gulu, closer to the park.
Kitgum is the town after Gulu on the usual road to Kidepo. Use it as a marker on the map and as a possible place to stop. Do not count on a bus, taxi or other connection from Kitgum into the park without confirming it first.
If you plan to drive yourself, look at the section on Entebbe airport and rental cars in our Kampala to Kidepo guide.

Gulu and its history
A city that has been through a long war.
The Acholi region carries the weight of a civil war that began in the 1980s and lasted about 20 years. It is a historical fact, and it shapes how many people in the north talk about their home. It is not a description of the city today.
Meet people with the same respect you would expect at home. If someone shares a story, listen, and leave the choice to speak about the past to them.

Traffic and light
Uganda drives on the left. Avoid night driving outside the main Kampala to Entebbe road.
The right vehicle

Inside the park
Self-driving is allowed inside the park and has its own tariff, but you must stay on the tracks. Speed is limited to 40 km/h.
